A STEP CLOSER TO GLOBAL VACCINE EQUITY!

Updated: Jan 19, 2022

The Global Vaccine-sharing program reaches 144 countries!

Supplies to less economically developed countries have long been very limited due to the lack of vaccines, as more economically developed countries have secured most of the doses available from December 2020. However, the previous quarter's shipments have increased exponentially, allowing COVAX to reach the milestone of 1 billion doses deployed to 144 countries, including LEDCs. This is a breakthrough in the recuperating process and brings us one step closer to global vaccine equity.

67% of the MEDCs population have been fully vaccinated compared to the 5% in LEDCs. First dosages have yet to be deployed to 40% of the world’s population.

Despite the wide gap between MEDCs and LEDCs, deliveries have drastically increased – Reaching 144 countries with 1 Billion doses!!

In spite of the surge, vaccine inequity remains high!

In order to meet the WHO target of 70% vaccination of LEDCs by July, more funds are needed by Gavi, the vaccine alliance and co-manager of COVAX. It was COVAX’s 2021 goal to deliver 2 billion doses, although it was hindered by richer states’ hoarding of confined shots, export restrictions, and regular shifts within its organization.
